Copena Points

Copena, Copena Articulate, Copena Triangular, Copena Round Base,Stemmed Copena

Late Archaic to Woodland (3000-1800) B.P.
The Copena Complex of points are occasional finds in this area, the center of their distribution being to the west of here in the middle TN river area.  My most frequently found Copena is the eared version called Copena articulate .  The Copena points  are associated with the burial mounds era and the word Copena is derived from the combining of copper and galena, two minerals often found in association with this culture.
Characteristics:
SIZE :  These are medium to Large points measuring about 1,1/2" to 5", with most being around 2".
KEY FEATURES:

Copena-Classic,  (shield form) Triangular blade, with  recurved blade edges and a square slightly flared stem, many have needle tips, and are very well made.  Most of these points are medium to very thin.

Variants:

Copena-Articulate:  Straight to recurved blade edges, straight to incurvated base, basal corners can have slight to very pronounced ears

Copena-Triangular: This  Copena has  parallel sides near the base and usually a straight base, the shoulders can show a weak concave edge at the base.

Copena -Round base:Similar to the triangular Copena with the difference being that the base is rounded giving an Ovid look to the point

Stemmed -Copena (A.K.A Bakers Creek):. Similar to the Round-base Copena with the difference being that the base is side-notched yielding a flared stem.

THICKNESS:  Thin  to Medium
SIMILAR TYPES: Benton blade, Frazier,Stanfield, Tennessee River,Nolichucky
FLAKING:  Archaic, to random woodland, many with fine edge work.
