The Big Sandy Complex of points are a frequent find in this area of Tennessee (3%) according to my records . Some of these Archaic side notched points are the oldest points we commonly find (up to 10,000 B.P.) in this area. Their style and design make them relatively easy to identify.
Characteristics:
SIZE : These are small to medium points measuring about 1/2" to 3", with most being around 1,1/2".
KEY FEATURES:
Big Sandy: Side Notched, triangular to spade-shaped blades most are serrated. Bases are moderate to heavily ground, notches are often ground. The base can be straight to concave and the ears are often square. Many show excellent horizontal flaking to a medium ridge
VARIANTS::
Broad Base:The base is usually ground and is wider than the blade.
Big Sandy E-Notched: The notches have high point rises pointing outward forming the letter E. formed by taking a double chip out of the side notch. This is a very rare modification of this type..
Contracting Base: Side notched with deep concave base and dropping ears
Leighton Base: The bases have small notches in the sides of the ear.
THICKNESS:Thin to Medium
SIMILAR TYPES: PineTree, Palmer, Brewerton Side-notched, Leighton.
FLAKING: Archaic, many with serration on the blade.
